When I first submitted my Collo Proposal Form, I didn't realize that we had to complete thirty project hours. On my proposal form, I submitted that I wanted to attend multiple missionary seminars to further my knowledge about missionary work. Now, I have decided to change this from an informative project to a physical improvement project. Every Thanksgiving, The Goose Chase hosts the 5K Turkey Trot. My proposal now is to train from this three mile run! Last semester, my project consisted of attending twenty cycling classes to improve upon my cardio in my workouts. I've been wanting to run in this race for years now, but never seem to get around to just go for it! This year, I want to dedicate my project time to training for the race. Each week, I will be setting aside time, depending on how busy I am with school, to train. These training sessions will include, running three miles on the treadmill or outside and hill/sprint training. To track my progress, I will blog my baseline time, average time for each week or two, and my last time before the race.

On September 18, 2018, I attended the IRB information session. We met in Rogers-Stout to discuss how IRB works and what the process of IRB would entail. She talked about what the counsel would be looking for and the different stages of revision that we may go though if our application was not up to par. I had my concerns about how long the process would take from begin to end. Through this session, I am now more at ease with the IRB process. This session counted as two of my five volunteer hours.
Today, I finished my last cycling class. When I first started these classes, I was excited to be able to increase the cardio in my workout routine. I didn't realize how difficult it was go to be. I really enjoyed going at the start of the semester. Of all the cycling classes, I preferred the class taught on Monday nights. It was a high intensity cycling class that pushed my to my limit. Toward the end of the semester, it became more of a chore trying to complete all twenty classes. In the end, I accomplished my goal of building up my endurance and cardio. Before each class, I took a picture of my cycling ticket to document each time I went.
On April 25th, 2018, I attended the ETSU Spring Spinning Ceremony. At this ceremony, I finished my last hour of volunteer/community service hours. Earlier in the month, I volunteered to announce the senior Midways that are graduating in May. My favorite quote by one of the seniors was, "My most memorable moment was when I turned in my thesis." Most people wrote sappy memorable moments, but his was by far my favorite. I have now completed all five community service hours.
Yesterday, March 27 2018, the Charity Ball took place at the Carnegie Hotel in Johnson City. The Honors College Student Council teamed up with CIDA, a new organization on campus, to raise money for Small Miracles. Small Miracles is a therapeutic equestrian organization that caters to children with special needs. Weeks leading up to the event, CIDA members, along with help from the HCSC, held a bake sale to raise money for the charity, The evening consisted of dancing, dinner and desserts. Being a Midway, it was a great way to meet new honors students and support a deserving cause!
On Monday, March 26 2018, I visited the Reece Museum on the ETSU campus. There were three rooms that displayed varies works of art by the BFA senior students. The one section of art work that stood out to me involved sculptures and photos taken in nature. The student had taken natural materials, such as dirt or leaves, and morphed them into a shape, The student then took the newly formed shape of dirt, placed it in a forest type setting, and took a picture. I'm not a fan of the other types of art work that was in the exhibits, but I did think that this was an interesting piece.
The Well at East Tennessee State University has impacted my life greatly over the past two year. Along with the worship service and small groups, the Well is very involved in the community and helping others who are in need. On Friday February 23rd, I participated in a community outreach project through the Well with Second Harvest Food Bank. Eight ETSU students, myself included, helped to package food into bags that would be transport out into the community. Second Harvest caters mainly to children who come from low income families. They provide food for these children who may not have excess to food over the weekend while they are not in school. We packaged food such as small boxes of cereal, fruit cups, cans of soups, and crackers into plastic bags. As a group, we then placed these bags of food into boxes. These boxes would eventually be delivered to different drop off locations where children and adults can received the food they need to get by. Through this project. I have completed 4 out of the 5 hours of my community service.
Cycling has become one of my favorite types of endurance classes I have taken. When we were first told to begin a developmental project over the course of the semester. I was unsure of what I wanted to do. Ever since graduating high school, I had become serious about working out consistently to improve my physical health. Because of this, along with a good diet, I ultimately lost 20 pounds. My workouts consisted mostly of weight lifting and very little cardio. When I heard about cycling, I thought that this would be a perfect fit for me to improve upon my lack of cardio type workouts. So far, I have attended 8 class which last an hour apiece. I have trained under 3 cycling instructors, who all have different variations of intensity. I enjoy the classes that are more intense, because I like to push myself to get the best results from the workout.
The class itself involves different types of interval exercise. Some intervals consist of working on pace and climbing hills while others work on speed and increased resistance. I have completed 8 hours of my project thus far. A new semester of Collo brings new projects and events to attend. This spring we are required to work on a semester long project to develop and better ourselves are honor students. I have decided that I will be developing myself physically and working on myself through cycling classes. The CPA on the ETSU campus offers cycling/spin classes throughout the week. I weight train frequently about 4-6 days a week, but I would like to do more cardio. I run sporadically throughout the week, but I have been wanting to mix it up and try something new. Spin class will give me a chance to experience something new and allow me to step out of my comfort zone.
Five Hours Community Service
Thanksgiving morning has always been something I have looked forward to, but this year meant even more to me. Early on Thanksgiving, my father, brother and I went to Trinity Baptist Church in Erwin Tennessee to help with the Thanksgiving of Food. At the church's Fellowship Hall, we organized, and sorted food that would be placed in to-go boxes and later distributed to the community. This is not only a way for families in need to receive a home cooked Thanksgiving meal but also for Trinity Baptist to show others God's love. The box consisted of turkey, stuffing, green beans, mashed potatoes, and gravy. Also, included in the meal was a roll, cranberry salad, and a dessert. As a part of the food assembly team, I was in charge of making sure that each box received the right amount of potatoes and stuffing. Also, I aided in boxing up the rolls and cranberry salad for delivery. I loved being able to take time to help my hometown community receive meals for the holidays. |
